Tribute to Coach Hazell

Distinguished Alumnus

zackˇey \'zach-e\ or zarchˇey n, pl zackˇeys [origin unknown] Any of several species of North American adolescent males between the ages of six and 12 who frequented the Bennett School basketball court from sunrise to sunset from the late 1950s until the mid 1970s. Often seen wearing black, low-cut Converse sneakers, dirty socks, Boston Celtics t-shirts and gym shorts. Small herds frequently raced between Lein’s Market and Bennett School delivering cold soda and potato chips to alpha males known as "Originals" or "Hall of Famers." Zackeys were not allowed to sit in the Class A Circle without T's permission. Despite the rigid caste system, some zackeys achieved success later in life as elementary school principals, regional sales directors or small business owners.
