Tribute to Coach Hazell

Mark Osowski

Leominster High School alumnus (LHS ’81) and Bennett School summer league player Mark Osowski was an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers at the time of his untimely death on Aug. 22, 2004 after a month-long struggle with pancreatis. (For details see http://www.lhsmemories.com/osowski.htm)

He joined Cleveland from the Golden State Warriors after spending the last three seasons (2000-03) with the Warriors organization as an assistant coach. In his last season, he helped the Warriors to a 17-game improvement from the prior season, which marked the largest turnaround in the NBA in 2002-03.

Mark began his NBA coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Hornets. During his tenure with the club, the Hornets owned a 180-116 (.608) record including two 50+ win seasons in 1996-97 and 1997-98 and three playoff appearances.

Mark and Cavaliers Head Coach Paul Silas worked together as assistants for two seasons in Charlotte from 1997-99 under Dave Cowens. He remained on the coaching staff when Silas was promoted to head coach midway through the 1998-99 season and continued as an assistant during Silas’ first full season as Hornets head coach in 1999-2000.

Mark joined the Hornets staff after serving as a head coach and assistant for the Connecticut Pride of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) during the 1995-96 season. He was also an assistant coach for two seasons from 1993-95 with the Rapid City Thrillers of the CBA. During that span, Mark helped the team to the playoffs in both seasons and served as an assistant coach at the 1994 CBA All-Star Game in Fort Wayne.

From 1991-95, Mark coached in the Southern California Pro League and was named Coach of the Year in 1992 after leading his team to the League Championship. His coaching career began in 1985-86 as an assistant coach at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He then coached basketball and football at LHS for four seasons. Mark returned to the collegiate level in 1990 as an assistant coach at Division II Assumption College in Worcester, where he helped coach the team to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship Game on two occasions.

Mark conducted the “Mark Osowski Pro Basketball Camp for Boys and Girls” in Leominster, for eight years. During his last two summers, he was selected by the National Basketball Coaches Association to work at the Dirk Nowitzki Basketball Academy held in Munich, Germany. He also was a member of the coaching staff at “Centered," a camp held throughout New England that specializes in big man instruction.

Mark was a 1985 graduate of the University of Massachusetts where he earned a degree in Business Communication. As a collegiate player at Dean College (1981-83), he was a two-year starter and served one season as team captain. He earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from Fitchburg State College in 1990.

Mark sponsored the Catherine Osowski Memorial Scholarship to a LHS graduate who pursued a career in the nursing/health care field. He was born on February 14, 1963 in Leominster.

Regarding his days in Leominster, Marks said, "Our (high school team) team went 15-6 my senior year and made the districts losing to Holy Name. I played in the Bennett Summer League as a sophomore in high school through age 30 when we moved out of Massachusetts. It was a great experience."
